The reading exam

In the reading exam you show that you understand Dutch texts. Here you read how the exam works at A2 and in the staatsexamen Nt2 (B1 and B2), and how you can practise.

Reading at level A2

The reading exam at A2 is part of the civic integration exam. You read texts and answer questions. You take the exam on a computer.

You take the language exams at A2 if you integrate under the Wet inburgering 2013 (Civic Integration Act 2013), or if your level in the B1 route was lowered to A2. Do you take the exams at B1 or B2? Then that is the staatsexamen Nt2 (state exam Dutch as a second language).

Reading in the staatsexamen Nt2 (B1 and B2)

  • You get a booklet with texts. The questions and answers are on the computer.
  • There are 6 texts with about 36 questions. They are always multiple choice questions: you choose the right answer.
  • The exam takes 110 minutes for Programma I (B1) and 100 minutes for Programma II (B2).
  • The texts are about work, study and daily life in the Netherlands.
  • You may use the Van Dale Pocketwoordenboek Nederlands als tweede taal (NT2), a pocket dictionary. Other dictionaries are not allowed.

There are different kinds of questions. Sometimes you choose what the text is about or who it is for. Sometimes you choose what a part of the text means or what the conclusion is. And sometimes you look up information in the text.

Tips for practising

  • Read the question carefully first. Then you know what to look for in the text.
  • You do not always have to read the whole text. For some questions you only look up a certain piece of information.
  • Practise with real texts from your own life, such as a letter from the municipality, a message from school or a leaflet.
  • Write down the words you do not know, and repeat them often.

Practise on DutchKlaar

On DutchKlaar you practise reading with short texts and questions at A1, A2 or B1. You can also paste your own text, such as a letter, and get questions about it.

DutchKlaar is a practice website. We are not DUO and not an official organisation. Rules can change. For your own situation, look in Mijn Inburgering on inburgeren.nl, or ask your municipality (gemeente).
