Taking an exam again

Did you not pass an exam? That can happen. You can take the exam again. Here you read how that works and what it costs.

The result

Did you take KNM or a language exam at A2? Then you get the result by letter within 8 weeks. You also see the result in Mijn Inburgering.

Did you take the staatsexamen Nt2 (B1 or B2)? Then you see the result in Mijn DUO after about 5 weeks. You also get the result by email and by post.

Taking an exam again

Every time you take an exam is called an attempt (poging). For a new attempt you register for the exam again. For KNM and the language exams at A2 you do this in Mijn Inburgering.

Did you fail a part of the staatsexamen Nt2? Then you can take that part again. You register in the same way as the first time, in Mijn DUO. You can only do this once you have the result.

What does a new attempt cost?

Are you an asylum status holder (asielstatushouder) under the Wet inburgering 2021? Then the municipality (gemeente) pays for 2 attempts at each exam. Do you need more attempts? Then you pay for them yourself. You cannot borrow from DUO for this.

Are you an asylum status holder under this law and do you pass the first time? Then you may take the exam once more at a higher level.

Are you not an asylum status holder? Then you pay for each attempt yourself or with your DUO loan. The prices are on inburgeren.nl.

For the staatsexamen Nt2 you see in Mijn DUO whether you have a free exam, or whether you can pay with your loan.

Is level B1 not working?

Do you follow the B1-route (B1 route) and can you not pass the language exams at level B1? And did you follow at least 600 hours of language lessons? Then talk to your municipality. Maybe you can go to level A2. This is called afschalen (lowering the level).

Lowering the level is only possible in the B1-route.

Watch your time

You have a fixed time to integrate: the inburgeringstermijn (integration term). So register again soon. It can take more than 6 weeks before you can take the exam.

DUO also looks at how often you took an exam. For example for the amount of a fine (boete), and for some kinds of extra time or ontheffing.
